No fewer than thirteen people perish and ninety-eight hurt in train derailment in Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the pace and execution of the country's key public works projects.

The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the country's president.

The official announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Major Initiative of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his administration's developmental agenda for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a significant increase of its duties in national works. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled ongoing concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an prompt halt in the development and management of all such projects.

This halt was requested pending a thorough technical review. The party emphasized that the situation "requires immediate answers."

In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in full compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these national undertakings.
